When speaking about events and festivals in different times of the year, Slovenia can offer great diversity.

Ljubljana

Music and Theater shows

The world`s greenest capital city offers many bars and restaurant in the old city center where you can enjoy concerts, good food and drinks, especially in vibrant summers nights. There are many different events throughout the year.

Most concerts are organized in Križanke and bigget ones in Stožice Stadium. You can buy tickets on Eventim portal, where almost all concerts in Slovenia are posted. In summer time, there is Festival Ljubljana where a great number of different performers present themselves.

If you like live performances, it is best to visit SNG opera and balet Ljubljana or Drama, but chose the shows carefully, as they are mostly performed only in Slovenian language, but some also have English subtitles.

In summer, there are organized Traditional Slovenian evenings (almost every day), which are great if you want to experience local culture, music and food.

Sport activities

Ljubljana is known for its Ljubljana Marathon. At this marathon, thousands of people meet every year. There are also many other sport possibilities inside and outside. You can walk up the hill called Rožnik in Ljubljana or walk the 32.5 long path of Remembrance and Comradeship (“Pot ob Žici”) around Ljubljana. You can also choose one of many organized inside sport activities (for example swimming in Tivoli  Park pools, etc.).

Fairs, festivals and markets

Ljubljana offers many markets throughout the year. The food market is open almost every day, offering seasonal home grown food. Every Friday, from March to October, there is also special food market – Open kitchen, where Slovenian restaurants present themselves and prepare food from different parts of the world.

In Ljubljana, exhibitions and fairs are organized often. Most fairs take place at Gospodarsko razstavišče.

Music and Theater shows

In Maribor, the second biggest city in Slovenia, theater shows are performed at the Slovenian National theatre (Drama and opera balet) and Narodni dom Maribor.

There are a lot of music festivals throughout the year, for example, Maribor hosts the internationally known Festival Lent in the end of June, with different types of music and performers; in June Brežice organizes the BMM Festival with popular Balkan and Slovenian singers. It is best to check a Slovenian tourist site for programs and current events.

We have to mention Ptuj Carnival which happens every year in February. A lot of traditional masks from all over Slovenia present themselves, especially the most popular “Kurent” mask, to celebrate the end of winter.

Sport activities

Many recognized international sport events and rich geographical diversity offer a number of possibilities for recreation and also professional training. Slovenia has well developed and equipped sports infrastructure, a wide offer of sport activities (for individuals and team sports) and numerous trails through the nature and cities.

For example, there are a few other marathons organized in Slovenia, such as the Three hearts marathon, cycling marathons and others.

Slovenia also organizes big sport competitions, where you can cheer for your favorite athletes. For example, the world known Planica – FIS Ski Jumping World Cup and Golden Fox – FIS Ski World Cup for Women.

  • Celje: There are a few fairs organized throughout the year.
  • Goriška Brda: The Cherry Festival (June).
  • Kozjansko park – Kozjansko Apple Festival (October).
